A hop basket allows the addition of hops to the boil. It is a steel mesh filter container that hangs off one side of the boiler. Hops may be easily added at various stages of the boil. While wort easily flows through the fine mesh filter of a hop basket, it restrains the finest particulate from entering the boiler, ostensibly allowing the hops to impart all of the expected bitterness, flavour, and aroma without increasing the amount of trub in the wort.
