Lovibond is the original system for characterizing beer colour. It has its origins in the late 1800’s. The original lovibond system was created by J.W. Lovibond in 1883, and used coloured slides that were compared to the beer colour to determine approximate value (expressed as degrees Lovibond). The Lovibond scale was later replaced by the SRM scale. SRM = (1.3546 × °L) – 0.76
